URNA
A team of architects, designers, curators, and art directors has developed a geometric construction of large, unmarked boulders that accumulate over time. These spherical modules, in which cremated remains can be embedded, symbolize universal forms that connect individuals to a broader cosmic reality. They invite tactile engagement and cultural reinterpretations, shaping an evolving language of remembrance.
The centre piece of Malta pavilion’s ‘URNA’ is a 2.4-meter sculptural sphere—crafted from reconstituted limestone—bridging heritage, sustainability and transformation. It references Malta’s history using the traditional material limestone, guiding audiences to reflect on cycles of life, memory and renewal.
The installation is the result of a collaborative effort involving ACM, Maltese creatives, and renowned international institutions including the University of Malta and the Harvard School of Architecture. This partnership aims to create a deeply engaging and visually resonant experience, establishing Malta’s global presence as an innovator in design and cultural thought. Commissioned by Arts Council Malta, ‘URNA’ challenges conventions and inspires dialogue on death, ritual and continuity.
