Memory Grid ﺷﺒﻜﺔ اﻟﺬاﻛﺮة

‘Memory Grid’ reimagines ancient vessels as a metaphor for how humanity preserves what it holds most precious. For centuries, pottery in Oman has been more than a craft—it has been a lifeline. Traditional vessels, shaped from the earth and carefully fired, held water and connected communities to the land. They embodied survival, resourcefulness, and a deep relationship with nature, carrying the stories of those who created and relied on them.

Over time, the role of these vessels evolved. Once practical tools, they became symbols of legacy, representing the values and lives of previous generations. In contemporary society, the need to protect and sustain has taken on new forms, and another resource—data—has become just as vital.

‘Memory Grid’ reimagines Omani pottery as a bridge between worlds. Through an immersive installation, visitors are invited to reflect on how objects, whether ancient or modern, serve as guardians of what matters most. What can these vessels teach us about what we choose to protect, both in the past and in the present?

As visitors move through the installation, they are encouraged to consider the shifting values of what we consider precious. These vessels, rooted in tradition, quietly echo the challenges of today’s world, where we must carefully balance what we keep, share, disseminate and pass to future generations.

Through this dialogue between past and present, ‘Memory Grid’ explores how objects carry the weight of human stories. It asks us to reflect on the connections between the physical and the conceptual, and how these connections define what we treasure across time.
