Inner Reflections, Outer Worlds

The Romanian Pavilion returns to the London Design Biennale, spreading its wings to reveal ‘Inner Reflections, Outer Worlds’: in the form of a sculptural portal. The sculpture invites the public to reflect on stories from contemporary Romanian personalities heralding from a range disciplines, each actively contributing to the country’s ever-evolving rich heritage.

The central circular portal becomes a gateway, opening up to reveal real tales of people whose work enriches Romanian culture and excellency.  ‘Inner reflections, Outer Worlds’ recognizes the close relation between storytelling and art and highlights the pressing need to address global challenges such as the impact of rapid technological advances on our lives, climate change and social inclusion.

The exhibition showcases remarkable achievements of Romanian excellence through the work of 100 visual artists. Each artwork is animated using AI technology, enhancing the visitor experience and taking them on an engaging journey of discovery. Composed of collected CDs, recycled paper, plastic covers from EKG electrodes and living plants, the installation is constructed of materials we deem obsolete.

Art should be available and accessible to everyone, and accessibility is central to the installation – special provisions have been made to ensure visually impaired attendees can experience the stories behind each piece. Through scanning the QR codes, visitors can engage with AI animations created by visual artists. The team recognizes the need to address the ethical use of AI, and this installation advocates for its use as a tool to enrich human creativity, rather than replace work of visual artists.

Humanity’s story is a collective one, however it consists of many individual stories. The Romanian Pavilion invites visitors to discover a handful of the countless inspiring stories that make up our world and reflect on the future we are building today.
