Emotional Reflections: The Soul of Seven Horizons

“Emotional Reflections: The Soul of Seven Horizons” is an immersive installation created for the Turkey Pavilion at the London Design Biennale 2025. The installation is entirely shaped around human emotions, engaging all senses—sight, sound and smell—inviting visitors into a sensory and emotional journey through the soul of Istanbul.

Inspired by the seven hills (Yeditepe) of Istanbul, the base platform features seven CNC-cut layered aluminum sculptures, each placed above a bed of traditional Turkish coffee grounds. This olfactory element releases the rich aroma of coffee into the space, awakening memory and cultural resonance.

Above the platform, fifteen sculptural forms developed by Halise Karakaya using her original material formula are suspended within a modular ceiling system. Though static in form, they dynamically interact with an ambient soundscape of the Bosphorus—ferry horns, seagulls, and waves—through a responsive lighting system.

Without motion or emotional sensors, the lighting responds purely to sound frequencies. Louder, more vibrant audio segments trigger the upper sculptures to light up, while softer sounds illuminate the lower layers. This choreography of light transforms the installation into an ever-changing emotional landscape.

By merging audio, light, and scent, the installation offers a meditative and multi-sensory experience, grounding the audience in the poetic essence of Istanbul, both timeless and ever-evolving.
