25 Jun 2025 13:00 - 14:00 Somerset House, Screening Room

For millennia, oceans have connected people and places. Their huge flows of energy, water, life, and raw materials sustain an abundance of living things, including humankind, and shape their future on the planet. Some of our most treasured places are located beside oceans, many within dynamic and volatile coastal environments.

In association with the pavilion Coastal Connections: Sharing Solutions, Building Resilience and following the publication of her book Blue Machine: How the Ocean Shapes Our World, Helen Czerski (Physicist, Oceanographer and Associate Professor at UCL) talks with John Darlington (Archaeologist and Director of Projects at World Monuments Fund Britain) to explore how the oceans have shaped coastal heritage sites and the communities that care for them.
